SUNKISSED FAMILIES Co-sponsors Oscar Nominated “Life Animated” Screening, Which Shows how Media Can Impact Children with Autism.

On February 10, 2017 The Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development hosted a screening of “Life Animated” and a post-screening Q&A including Ron Suskind, American journalist and author. Suskind charts his son Ownen’s journey with autism. Shortly after Owen turned three he stopped speaking. Owen was diagnosed with autism. Owen’s parents worked tirelessly to understand the quiet world their son was living in. They discovered that Owen not only responded well to Disney animation, but that he had memorized the dialogue of every Disney animated film. The lessons portrayed on the screen became the foundation for many of the vital skills Owen used to navigate his way in the world. “Life Animated” received rave reviews from critics and won numerous awards including the Sundance Film Festival Award for Best Direction and the Special Achievement Annie Award. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature category at the 89th Academy Awards. There was a broad coalition of groups that have joined to support this event including SUNKISSED FAMILIES and the Center for Social & Emotional Health, The Coalition for Autism Support [CAST], the Center on Media & Child Health at Boston Children’s Hospital, the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life, the Tufts University Diversity Fund, the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Film & Media Studies Program, the Department of Community Health, and Tufts University Hille’s Merrin Moral Voices Lecture Series.
